Thai man outraged at paying ‘farang price’ at Krabi

A Thai man from Phuket shared his anger on Facebook after he was forced to pay the ridiculous tourist fee to enter the popular Emerald Pool at Krabi because of his skin colour.

Grittapohn Chattreesagoon (yes, that’s obviously a Thai name) wrote Saturday that he was asked to pay the tourist entrance fee of THB200 at the Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) while his Thai-looking friends from Phuket only paid THB20.

“I went with three Phuket guys, and the staff asked my friends for a THB20 fee. Then they looked at me and asked me for THB200,” Grittaphon wrote in Thai. “My friends said I’m from Phuket too, but they insisted, so we just left.”

His Facebook post went viral over the weekend as netizens condemned the officials.

Grittaphon said the action of the official was a form of racism because he is Thai and he can speak, read and write the language like a local. He also speaks with a Southern accent.

“How is this different than traditional racism?” he wrote. “If you were born here and grew up here, you’re a Southern [Thai] no matter what ethnicity you are.”
