Thailand’s embassy in Yangon is offering two repatriate Thai citizens from Myanmar amid rising violence that has seen security forces kill dozens of civilians protesting the military’s coup, including at least 38 on Wednesday alone.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon yesterday announced it would provide two relief flights for Thai nationals via Myanmar National Airlines starting next week. Thais who wish to return home must contact the embassy by today for a flight on March 12 and by March 11 for another on March 16.
The embassy on Pyay Road in Dagon Township can be reached at (+95) 1-222-784 or (+95) 1-226-728 from 9:30am to 7pm every day or its 24-hour emergency number (+95) 9-797-002-801 or by email at thaiembassyygn@gmail.com.
The United Nations’ special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, told reporters at U.N. headquarters yesterday that Wednesday was the bloodiest day since the coup happened Feb. 1. “We have today — only today — 38 people died. We have now more than over 50 people died since the coup started,” Burgener said.
On Sunday, at least 18 people were killed nationwide as the military tries to forcefully put down widespread dissent to its rule.
