A 14-year-old exchange student has been charged with making a false bomb threat aboard a Thai Smile flight at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday night, police said today.

The boy, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, was traveling on flight WE137 which flies from Bangkok to Chiang Rai. Upon boarding, he reportedly said to the cabin crew: “Be careful. There is a bomb in my bag.”

The flight attendants informed the plane’s captain who brought in officials. Passengers were evacuated, and the teen’s bags were searched. No explosive was found.

The flight, which was scheduled to take off at 6:45pm, was delayed for nearly five hours. The plane finally departed at 11:20pm.

The boy was reportedly traveling with 31 other students and teachers, who were flying back to Thailand from the Philippines after participating in a cultural exchange program, INN News reported.

The teen will be prosecuted for the bomb scare.
