Suspected ATM skimmers arrested in Bangkok with 795 cards

Two suspected ATM skimmers were arrested in downtown Bangkok yesterday.

Police searched two “suspicious” Romanian men in the Khlong Toey district and found many ATM cards on them. A subsequent search of their hotel room on Sukhumvit Soi 11 found another 795 cards, which is a few more than typically found with travelers. They also found an ATM skimming device.

The men were arrested on suspicion of using the cards to withdraw money from machines in Bangkok, according to police Maj. Gen. Suebsak Phansura of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators found 364 of the cards were blank. The men confessed they were hired for about THB22,250 each to withdraw money from Italian bank accounts, police said.

They are believed to have taken about THB1 million from many area ATM machines, Bangkok Post reported.
