A Phuket man is facing rape charges after confessing to taking a UK woman to an abandoned house and molesting her after they met at a bar on Thursday night, police said Saturday.
Amnat Atthajak, a 40-year-old sushi seller, was arrested on Friday after the 24-year-old victim filed a police report the next morning. She claimed that the pair sat and drank together at a bar near Kata beach the night before and she asked him for a ride back to her hotel, Thai Post reported.
However, because she was under influence of alcohol, she claimed to have passed out and awoke to find Amnat raping her at an abandoned house. The woman told police that she then managed to escape and sought help from locals nearby.
Wassana Sukkaew, an owner of a bakery shop, assisted the tourist in filing the police complaint after finding the Brit crying outside her store at about 8:45am, according to Khaosod.
Wassana told the local-language paper that the victim claimed to have been raped and was feeling pain in her abdomen. Later, the British national was sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital by the police for an examination.
Those tests appeared to show that she had not been raped, though the victim told police she had already cleaned herself before the examination as she was fearful of potential STDs. She plans to provide a statement to that effect in court.
Police that same day arrested the sushi chef, who admitted to having taken her to an abandoned house near Rawai beach after drinking together at Kata Green Beach Bar.
He further confessed to having taken advantage of the woman, saying that he penetrated her with his fingers but stopped short of forcible intercourse.
Police have informed the UK Embassy.
