Sukhumbhand’s spokesman defends sumptuous spending on office redesign

This is too much. Wasant Meewong, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra’s advisor, defended the governor’s THB16.5 million office renovation after the budget was published online and went viral.

Wasant said that the big budget was justified as the money was used to renovate many rooms, including the offices of deputy governors, advisers, secretaries, meeting rooms, and a reception room.

The project was widely ridiculed online because of the total overall price and sumptuous furniture included.

He said that the project was started after a bathroom ceiling collapsed and it was discovered that the ceilings in many rooms needed to be opened up and the plumbing repaired, adding to the total cost.

Sukhumbhand’s loyal stooge even went on to say that his boss wasn’t involved with the renovation at all and had taken a leave of office at the time of the remodelling.

Wasant went on to explain that the dining tables and chairs, reported to cost almost THB700,000, were placed in the reception room and that the big screen televisions were for flood-monitoring and meetings, not personal use.

Sukhumbhand did not comment on the report and no one commented on the Blu-ray player that was part of the renovation.

City clerk Peerapong Saichua reported that a fact-finding panel has been created to look into the renovation for 60 days and report about any irregularities.
