Strong winds, high waves across south as monsoon bears across Thai gulf

A monsoon is crossing the Thai gulf and driving heavy rain, strong winds and high waves toward several southern provinces, including popular tourist destinations in Surat Thani and Krabi.

State meteorologists this morning warned that waves in the upper gulf, from Surat Thani northward, will reach 2 meters, while those further south could crest at upward of 4 meters. Those locales hit by thunderstorms could churn with the most violence and waves over 4 meters.

No rain is expected in the capital, where warm weather is forecast to push highs in the low- to mid-30s and lows in the mid- to lower-20s through Tuesday.

Along the gulf coast, residents have been warned to keep a lookout for inshore surges. All ships should proceed with caution while small craft are advised to stay docked until the storm surge passes.

Through Saturday, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang and Satun are expected to see isolated heavy, and possibly torrential, rainfall.

Next week, Tuesday through Sunday, a strong cold front from China will extend over upper Thailand causing cooling, a touch of which will be felt in Bangkok. The monsoon, meanwhile, will still be making its way across the gulf and south, with strong wings and high waves to persist from Surat Thani downwards.

The department urges people to stay updated and call their 24-hour hotline at 1182 for urgent inquiries.
