Thailand Golf Championship swings into action

The Thailand Golf Championship, held at Amata Spring Country Club, Chonburi, swings into action this Dec. 6-9.

The second edition of the Championship has managed to entice a number of golf’s biggest names to the Kingdom, including title holder Lee Westwood, 2012 Masters Winner Bubba Watson, 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel, Ryder Cup stars Sergio Garcia and Nicholas Colsaerts, 2011 British Open champion Darren Clarke, Ryo Ishikawa, PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan, larger-than-life John Daly and eight of the top-10 players from the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit led by number one Thaworn Wiratchant.

Thailand will be well represented and local stars, such as Thongchai Jaidee, Prayad Marksaeng, Prom Meesawat, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Arnond Vongvanij will try to claim the USD1 million (THB30 million) prize money in front of their home crowd.

Defending champion Lee Westwood will be hoping for a showing similar to last year’s, when he had virtually wrapped up the title at the halfway mark after an opening two rounds of 60 and 64, which equaled the Asian Tour’s 36-hole record of 20-under-par to open up a massive 11-shot lead.

Westwood eventually finished seven strokes clear of second place contender South African Charl Schwartzel.
