Tuesday is the fourth day of a search and rescue operation after a Polish man and Thai woman went missing Saturday while kayaking off Phuket’s Yanui Beach.

Authorities today said they have expanded the effort with a fleet of vessels and helicopters in search of Juszkiewicz Mateusz, 26, and 23-year-old Weerakan Siripaphakorn, who hired kayaks with friends but did not return.

Officers from the provincial police force and marine department have scoured land and air to find the pair in a search area that has included Koh Kaew Pisadarn, Promthep Cape, Naiharn Beach and Kata Beach.

Aroon Soros, municipal mayor of Rawai subdistrict, said he is still optimistic about the operation as the two were said to have been wearing life jackets.

Weerakan’s mother Chudarasa Siripaphakorn traveled from her home in Nakhon Sawan province to Phuket to board a helicopter used in the search. She said her daughter just graduated from university a few days before going missing.

She said she still has hope that her daughter will be found alive.
