Report: Thailand drinks more than any ASEAN country

Thailand is the heaviest-drinking country in Southeast Asia, according to a report by the World Health Organization.

Thailand consumes boozes more per capita than any country in ASEAN at 7.08 liters of pure alcohol per adult per year. The second most prolific boozers in the region are Laotians, followed by Filipinos, Cambodians, and Vietnamese.

The Current Situation and Effect of Alcohol Consumption in Thailand 2013 report conducted by the Center for Alcohol Studies (CAS) showed that 31.4 percent of Thais over 15 drink alcohol regularly, about 17 million people.

Interestingly, the report found that each regular drinker consumes 7.1 liters of pure alcohol – the equivalent of 226 bottles of bear of 25 bottles of hard alcohol, ThaiPBS reported.

Does that sound about right?
