Tourist Police said yesterday that about 300 single Thai women were the victims of a marriage scam that saw their names listed by corrupt officials as the wives of Indian men seeking to game the system to extend their visas.

Police carried out the investigation after 13 women came forward. These woman found out that their legal status had been changed to “married” — to Indian men they’d never met. *record scratch*

Police found out that all of the fake marriage licenses were issued by Wang Muang district in central Saraburi province, where three officials have been fired and charged with forging documents.

The two were reportedly accepting THB2,000 (about US$62) bribes to “marry” Indian customers to random, single Thai woman. Is it just us or were these officials selling their integrity at amazingly bargain prices?

Eight Indian men who used the ill-gotten marriage licenses to extend their visas have been arrested.

Police have also issued arrest warrants for the rest of the foreign men, some of whom have reportedly fled the country.
