A small dog was seen patiently waiting for its owner by a canal outside of Bangkok as rescue volunteers retrieved the man’s body from the waters yesterday evening.

Si Samut rescue volunteers responded to a call that a 48-year-old man, who lived by the Pasi Charoen canal in Samut Sakhon province, may have fallen into the water after his neighbors found his sandals by the bank. His sweet puppy also waited there patiently for his master to emerge from the water.

It took 30 minutes for divers to discover the man’s body, identified as Somchai Pusuwan, a truck driver, T News reported.

His neighbors said they hadn’t seen Somchai since Saturday while his brother said they last spoke on Saturday night.

Neighbors said that Somchai lived alone at his rented home by the canal and was a nice, generous person, but Somchai was known for his drinking habit — he was seen drunk most nights and complained often about how much he missed his wife and kids, who live in another province.

Neighbors inspected his home and called rescue volunteers after they couldn’t find Somchai — only his sandals and puppy by the canal.

They suspected that Somchai fell into the canal while intoxicated. A police report has been filed, as his body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

Hopefully, a friend or family member will take in the poor pup.
