Citizens asked to heed local government advice during Tropical Storm Gaemi

Thai authorities are urging the public to heed the warnings and monitor advice from the local government as Tropical Storm Gaemi approaches.

The storm is set to make landfall in Thailand sometime this weekend and unleash heavy downpours in Rayong, Chantaburi, Chon Buri, and Bangkok. Gaemi is predicted to intensify as it moves to the Gulf of Thailand, bringing torrents of rain to the Phetchaburi and Ratchaburi area from October 8 to 10.

Capt Somsak Khaosuwan of the National Disaster Warning Center has urged the public to pay attention and heed the warnings and recommendations of their local agencies. He explained that each area would have a different response plan from others. He also stressed that authorities are ready to respond to emergency situations which may arise, while the armed forces are ready and on standby to support the government’s flood management efforts.

Hydro-Agro Informatics Institute Chief Royal Chitradon for his part said he is confident that authorities can control the flood situation in Bangkok. Additionally, he said that a joint operation center has been set up to monitor the flood situation in Bangkok.

Mr. Royal said drainage efforts in Bangkok are working better now as water-pushing boats have been placed in major canals. Water pumps have also been installed to drain water into canals on the west and east sides Bangkok, MCOT reported.
