A tropical storm traveling through the South China Sea is forecast to hit Thailand this weekend and dump heavy rain on Bangkok.
Temporary floods in certain areas of Bangkok are likely if the storm hits the city as projected, as has happened often lately.
The good news is that the storm won’t last long.
“It will keep on moving. That means it will only stay in Thailand a short time, for only three days,” said Prawit Jampanya, acting director of the Weather Forecast Bureau, according to the Bangkok Post.
The storm is currently forming 600 miles off the coast of Da Nang, Vietnam and is likely to hit the central coast of Vietnam on Thursday or Friday.
An average daily rainfall of 90 millimeters is expected during the storm, Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday. He predicted that floodwaters would drain from streets within an hour except for 206 problem areas of the city where drainage may take two to three hours.
The most vulnerable districts to floods in Bangkok are still Khlong Sam Wa, Min Buri, Nong Chok, and Lat Krabang because of their location outside the flood wall, City Hall spokesman Wasan Miwong said.
