Thailand Post, the government-owned mail service, recently introduced a test installation of “know-it-all” post boxes that can point you to the nearby tourist attractions and have USB channels to charge your phone.

The first run of 15 smart post boxes have been installed in the northern Phitsanulok province for testing and will roll out across the country in the near future.

The ultra-modern post boxes use solar powered and painted with a QR code that can link you to Thailand Post’s list of activities and restaurants in each province. They are aimed to help boost tourism and local economies.

The first lot of new post boxes are yellow, the color of peltophorum, the official flower of Phitsanulok province. Each province will get a different design to suit their unique nature.

So far, Thailand Post plans to install the know-it-all boxes in areas popular with tourists, so it is likely they will still keep the iconic, red post boxes in some areas for younger generations to see.
