A disgraced Thai monk will be defrocked and charged today with exposing himself to a woman during a Facebook chat and asking her to send nudes.
The victim, identified only as Lily, told police that she received a call on Facebook Messenger from a stranger on Wednesday night. As Lily uses Facebook as a platform to sell goods, she answered the call — only to find a masturbating monk.
She then did the only reasonable thing in that sort of situation and hung up.
The monk called again — this time offering her THB1,000 (about US$30) for nude pictures, at which point Lily’s friend suggested she take screenshots to submit to police and find out which temple he lives at.
The monk, now identified as 42-year-old Phra Kai Boonyako from Phitsanulok in northern Thailand, received a visit by police last night.
Phra Kai, who will be defrocked as soon as his abbot comes back, said that he used to work in a fishing boat before taking the orange robe a year ago.
Last month, he bought a mobile phone and claimed that he “didn’t know how technology works” and simply “pressed random buttons” until a pretty girl showed up on Facebook.
He thought that it’d be fun to offer her money for her nude pictures, not thinking it’d be a big deal.
After he’s defrocked, the monk will be charged with causing annoyance to another person, which is punishable with a THB5,000 (US$150) fine maximum, Sanook reported.
Police said that no illegal goods were found during a search of his dorm, so they’re now awaiting for the temple’s abbot to come back and defrock the suspect. For now, the monk’s own family has taken the mobile phone from him.
