A domestic helper in Chachoengsao province confessed to stealing from her employer before setting fire to the living room to cover her tracks… and then pretended nothing happened.

The homeowner, only identified as 31-year-old Wannasa, said she woke up at 5am on Friday to find that a fire was gutting her couch in the living room. She and her staff in the house were able to put out the fire on their own.

Initially, Wannasa suspected the fire was caused by a short circuit, until she checked CCTV to find out one of her cleaners, Janjira, 25, was the one who did it.

Pretending she had nothing to do with the incident, Janjira even helped clean the area that was damaged by the blaze.

The homeowner then called the police.

Pol. Capt. Sitthisak Buathana said that Janjira confessed immediately during the questioning when police showed her the security footage, Sanook reported.

She admitted to stealing THB3,000 (about US$90) from Wannasa’s purse that was left in the living room because she couldn’t afford to pay her debt.

Fearing that her employer would find out, she thought setting fire to the couch would cover her tracks.

Just for arson alone, she could face up to seven years in prison and/or a fine of up to THB14,000 (US$7,334).
