Let’s get naked! Nude life drawing at Attic Studios

Getting naked in a room full of strangers scrutinizing every detail of my body is something I’ve recently crossed off my bucket list.

Believe it or not stripping down was actually the easy part. Staying still without some part of me going numb with pain was another story.

Maybe you don’t have the desire to pose for a life drawing class, but being on the “safe” side of the easel as the artist-in-training could be a fun activity for you. In Bangkok, Attic Studios just happens to be the only one of its kind offering these sort of classes.  Life Drawing classes make up about 20 percent of the weekly Attic schedule – they run classes in many formats, including kid-friendly ones minus the nipples and body hair.

Scottish artist and owner of Attic Studios, Elsie Evans told me that Life Drawing classes bring together a plethora of students with different artistic backgrounds and agendas.

“We have many types of students attending our classes. Some come in to hone their figurative drawing skills in order to get in to art school,” she said. “Some are interested in portraiture – either in paint or pastel. Some professional artists like to share the cost of a model.”

Elsie explained that many beginners take her classes because they realize thatdrawing is an important part of any serious art education. But if you’re just an amateur, don’t worry. Artists of all levels are welcomed to join the classes so you don’t have to fret about the quality of work you produce at the end of the day. From canvas to canvas, Elsie believes the journey is more important than the destination,  “it’s the process that counts not the finished piece of art.”

What can you expect from a Life Drawing class at Attic Studios?

Firstly, they’re held on Thursdays with one session in the morning and another in the evening. When the weather is cool  enough, sessions can be held outside the studio for some al fresco drawing. Each class is three hours long with breaks. The choice of medium is up to the students: Oil/ Acrylic/ Watercolour/ Charcoal/ Pastel. Class sizes are on the smaller scale ranging from from 2-8 students, so everyone gets the attention they need from a qualified instructor.
