Indian passenger arrested for ripping off at least 20 taxi drivers in ‘no baht’ scam

An Indian man was arrested last night after he allegedly stole cash from at least 20 taxi drivers by pretending he didn’t have any Thai money and needed to stop in the middle of the ride to buy something.

Abdul Aziz, 29, was seized in Nana last night as four taxi drivers traveled to the station and identified him as the thief.

One of the victims, Seksan Pumeebun, 48, said Aziz hopped into his taxi at Central Chidlom on Monday and told him to drive to Suvarnabhumi Airport. However, when they were in Nana, Aziz said he needed to jump out at 7-Eleven to buy medicine.

To fool the taxi driver, Aziz whipped out a stack of dollar bills, saying he was sorry that he didn’t have any Thai money. Then, he asked to borrow some from him, according to Seksan.

Seksan said he gave Abdul THB1,800 cash, but he never returned to the taxi.

Another taxi driver, Piroj Kamket, 37, said he was almost fooled by Aziz in February, but he remembered other taxi drivers sharing stories of this guy online, so he refused to give him any money.

Piroj said Aziz hopped out of the cab anyway and escaped the fare after claiming he needed to stop to exchange money.

Piroj said that at least 20 taxi drivers he knew have been ripped off in the same way. Yesterday the taxi community discussed on social media that they may have spotted the thief, so Piroj alerted Lumpini police.

Aziz denied all charges, but police felt they had sufficient evidence and prosecuted him, Matichon repotted.
