Fatal shopping mall car plunge blamed on errant water bottle

A water bottle lodged under the brake pedal caused a woman to burst through a barrier and plunge to her death from The Mall Bangkapi’s parking lot last month, a police investigation concluded.

Supaporn Wiangnak, 35, died after falling a height of seven floors from the parking lot on Nov. 25 after her Honda Civic flipped midair to land on its roof.

The investigation found no irregularities in any of the vehicle’s systems, only a water bottle jammed under the car’s brake pedal with the top part pressing down the accelerator, adviser to Royal Thai Police Gen. Jaramporn Suramanee said yesterday.

It is believed Supaporn tried to stop the car by stomping on the brake pedal, which caused the top part of the bottle to push down on the accelerator and race the engine, Bangkok Post reported.
