Farewell Funky Villa: Fire destroys famous Thong Lor nightclub

This morning, a fire demolished Funky Villa, a popular nightclub among Thai university students and young locals, but fortunately, there were no casualties.

The fire broke out at around 2:30am at the club on Soi Thong Lor 10, which is usually packed with Thais in the evening, but because the club was already closed for the night, there were no customers at the scene, according to a witness.

The flames spread quickly at the back of the one-story nightclub, causing its roof to crumble. It took 10 firetrucks and 45 minutes to control the blaze.

According to waiter Lert Nanthajoy, 40, the fire broke out when the staff were cleaning up. He recalled the staff smelling something burning overhead. They looked up and saw sparks coming from electrical wiring on the ceiling.

The staff tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but their attempt was unsuccessful, so they called officials.

Thong Lor police said that the cause of the fire was an faulty electrical circuit. The damage is to be estimated, Prachachart reported.

It’s unknown when the club will reopen.
