In response to an outbreak of fake news in Thai media, a deputy police chief has confirmed there are no laws against snacking and putting on makeup while driving.

Following a false report that the new Land Traffic Act made eating and applying makeup while driving illegal, Deputy Police Commissioner Jirapat Bhumijit came out to say it is technically not illegal for you to do those things while operating a car.

The viral fake report claimed that eating or putting on makeup while driving could result in a fine of THB2,000, and one month in prison, Sanook reported.

However, Jirapat said that the activities could be classified as reckless driving and violators subject to a fine of THB400 to THB1,000.

He added that drivers are allowed to put on makeup and eat as they please when they’re stuck in traffic.

If reckless driving results in an accident where others are harmed, the driver will be charged accordingly, depending on the severity of the accident.

In all seriousness, taking your eyes off the road even for a moment is dangerous business. If you don’t think so, check out this amazing short documentary from everyone’s favorite German wild man of cinema Werner Herzog. It’s worth your time.
