Chonburi hairdresser goes viral for unique World Cup hair carvings

Joe Beauty, a hair salon in Chonburi’s Sri Racha neighborhood, has gone viral this week thanks to some crazily creative World Cup hair designs, including recreating the faces of famous players on the sides of customers’ heads.

As word of their football-themed ’dos spread, people across Chonburi started coming in with some fairly tricky requests. Most popular have been headshots of their favorite players and the 2018 official logo, said salon owner Seksorn Sodrum.

Popular requests so far have included Neymar, the Brazilian forward who plays in France; Argentinian heartthrob Lionel Messi; and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese ball player who needs no introduction.

Oddly (or perhaps not, given Thailand’s absence from the Cup), few people have asked for country-themed haircuts, Seksorn told Coconuts Bangkok.

The former factory worker opened Joe Beauty with his wife about eight years ago. They had been doing regular men’s and women’s haircuts until they stumbled on a YouTube tutorial showing the unique styling technique two years ago. It’s been their trademark more or less ever since.

Taking six months to master the art, Seksorn started with cartoons and Thai traditional patterns, a unique cultural style involving representations of flora, flames and cultural symbols for example. After gaining local attention, he started doing more elaborate temple designs — notably Wat Arun and Wat Phra Kaew.

And now they’ve come to the obvious logical conclusion: Ronaldo’s face.

The whole process, pre-design not included, takes about 60-90 minutes, with prices ranging from THB150-THB350 (US$5-US$11).

Buddha, of course
