Forget those coins, BTS is going cashless, baby — at least at some stations.

The BTS Skytrain operator yesterday announced that they have begun a trial run for cashless payments. The ticket-issuing machines at six stations now accept QR codes, allowing commuters to pay for fares using any banking applications and the Rabbit LINE Pay app on their smartphone rather than coins.

The six stations in the pilot program are Siam, Ari, Chong Nonsi, Samrong, Paknam, and Kheha.

In each of those stations, there will be two automatic machines that accept either QR code payments or traditional coins.

All 45 stations are scheduled to accept cashless payments by March of next year.

Dr. Anat Arbhabhiram, executive director of BTS Group Holdings Public Company Limited, revealed that the company is trying to keep up with the “cashless society” trend that’s rapidly growing in the kingdom, reported Bangkok Insight.

On top of that, the current method of paying for fares with coins is inconvenient for both the passengers and train operators, he added.

Will that mean less congestion and shorter lines during rush hours? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
