BTS officials said this morning they have ordered safety checks on the escalators at all skytrain stations after a step collapsed at an escalator at Phaya Thai station and a woman almost fell into the machine.

The BTS’ response came after Facebook user Anunya Rittichai posted a horrifying photo of an escalator missing a step yesterday, which has gone viral.

“It [the step] collapsed right in front of eyes. If only I had stepped on the escalator five seconds earlier, I would have been dead. I almost had a heart attack,” she wrote.

Anunya, however, disclosed that she and other passengers weren’t injured. She did not immediately reply to Coconuts for request for comments.

In the post, which has been shared over 40,000 times, many commenters demanded better safety standards and maintenance from the BTS to reflect the fares that just went up late last year.

BTS officials said in an online statement today that the escalator at Phaya Thai automatically stopped after the step failed, and the staff condoned off the area immediately.

The escalator resumed normal operation this morning after undergoing repairs.

BTS officials said that this was the first incident of its kind.
