To the horror of fellow travelers, an Australian national slit his own throat with a kitchen knife at a cafe inside Suvarnabhumi Airport yesterday morning.

Garreth Renner Mitchell, 34, took out two kitchen knives, each about 15 centimeters long, and cut himself with one of the knives twice inside Tate Cafe, on the third floor of the terminal. The other passengers at the cafe alerted security officials, Thai PBS reported.

Mitchell refused help from everyone and was bleeding. As he began to lose consciousness, officers dove in, tackling the man and grabbing both knives from him.

The medical team performed first-aid to stop him from losing more blood before transferring him to Samitivej Srinagarind Hospital for further medical attention. The Australian Embassy has been notified, according to The Nation.

Police said that Mitchell came to the airport alone without any luggage. He only had a Novotel room key on him.

The motive for Mitchell’s self-inflicted act is now under investigation.
