Stream films by and about the Karen dedicated to murdered activist ‘Billy’

Documentary fans and human rights campaigners have teamed up to host an online festival now streaming worldwide in honor of murdered Karen activist Porlachee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, who disappeared six years ago today.

Now through next week, Online FFFest: Karen Film Festival is streaming 19 movies dedicated to the Sgaw Karen people. Eleven films were created by Sgaw Karen filmmakers.

All programs, feature films and shorts are available with English subtitles, except The Scent of Haw Wor

Watch all 19 films through April 23 with all-access tickets that cost US$2.99.

Proceeds will be donated to support the Sgaw Karen communities suffering from COVID-19 and recent devastating fires.

The online event, organized by Friends Without Borders and the Documentary Club, is dedicated to Billy, the Karen lands right activist who disappeared April 17, 2014, while on his way to meet other Karen community protesters fighting eviction from their longtime homes in a national park. He was arrested by Kaeng Krachan park rangers and never seen alive again.

Five years after his disappearance, skeletal remains were found last year in a 200-liter oil drum underwater in the Kaeng Krachan National Park. Samples of DNA matched Billy’s mother, according to the Department of Special Investigation, which concluded that he had been murdered.

In January, murder charges were dropped against former Kaeng Krachan National Park chief Chaiwat Limlikit-aksorn, who led the team which arrested Billy and is the chief suspect in his death.
