New strict rules for what may enter your mouth on Phuket beaches

Adding to the confusing rules dictating how people may enjoy Phuket’s beaches is a new ban on eating and smoking on all island beaches.

Intended to clean up the far-from-pristine sands, the new rules announced yesterday come after a series of crackdowns on how the public space is used since the military coup last year which have affected use of beach chairs, encroachment by bars and restaurants and workers providing services to tourists.

“Despite smoking and eating being banned, people will still be able to drink on the beach,” Governor Nisit Jansomwong clarified to the Phuket Gazette.

That will help visitors keep happily dehydrated yet intoxicated enough to enjoy themselves.

The announcement was made at a news conference yesterday after the governor was forced to address grief from tourists forced by police to remove their sun beds.

Governor Nisit took it all in stride and kept his eyes firmly fixed on the future.

“It is time to move forward. We can’t do it alone. We all must work together,” he proclaimed.
