Here’s one for the saucy mamas who like a good deal and seeing buff dudes in small shorts. The Australian male strip show Thunder from Down Under is offering a special promotion designed to do moms and grandmas right — they are offering free entry to moms over 60 years old and grandmothers, as long as they come see the show with their offspring.
Not too shabby considering a single ticket to the global-touring show is THB2,500.
As part of the troupe’s tour this year, Thunder From Down Under will perform at Nana’s Levels club for four nights from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
Promoter Natt Kawinrachataprida, of YSIS Asia, who brought the men of Thunder to Bangkok last year to great success, told Coconuts she got the idea for the unusual senior promotion, called Mom & Granny Thunder Experience, from watching this YouTube video of a 103-year-old woman enjoying the show:
When Coconuts asked Natt if she thought many Thai women might bring along their mother or grandmother, she was not sure but encouraged them to do so. She said, “People always say, ‘My mom wouldn’t do that, she’s conservative.’ Trust me, I saw 40 to 70-year-old women at our last show who were laughing their heads off.”
She said that almost everyone enjoys the show, with many audience members being brought onstage to get the experience close up. “It’s just plain fun. That’s why I’m encouraging it so much. Our female-centric live production is made for women, by women,” she said, though she noted that everyone is welcome to attend and that many gay men and trans women were among the show’s attendees last year.
Additionally, she said that some men were dragged to the show by their girlfriends last year and ended up enjoying it. “Not particularly looking at the guys, but they commented on the energy and how hilarious it was watching the girls thoroughly enjoy themselves.”
The show has been around, featuring a revolving roster of dancers, for more than 20 years and has toured 18 countries, with Thailand being the first Southeast Asian country the men have performed in, following a break from their two-decade Las Vegas residency at Excalibur Hotel & Casino. The men have also been featured on popular TV shows such as The Ellen Show, The Tyra Banks’ Show, Project Runway, and more.
As far as the free tickets for mom and grandma, Natt said they can be booked in advance or collected at the door.
But don’t just think you can grab any saucy senior off the street to take advantage of the promotion. Natt pointed out that they’ll be checking IDs at the door to make sure the entrants are related.
