Eleven Places to get your vintage fashion fix now that Talad Rod Fai has moved

Talad Rod Fai, Bangkok’s vintage mecca where you can find 60-year-old (working) irons, old boat engines, fixie bikes to you heart’s content and Micky Mouse T-shirts all in the same dusty aisle, is no longer…located conveniently near a BTS station.

If you love haggling over old Levi’s, ancient sunglasses and dresses that may or may not have been someone’s grandma’s, you’re probably wondering what to do with yourself this weekend. Here are a few suggestions of where to dig for vintage treasures outside of Talad Rod Fai’s traditional bounds.

1. Again & Again
The brainchild of Masiri Tamsakul, the fashion editor of Marie Claire Thailand, this shop stocks high quality vintage and designer finds, some from as far as the US and Europe. Customers are quick to snap up pieces via Facebook, which is updated regularly.
Open daily. 0894865359

2. Wooden Submarine
It’s the hip, eccentric shop the Cauchon Hotel on Sukhumvit 45 was in need of. This secondhand treasure chest offers a slice of Americana circa 1967. Browse through authentic army duds, Hawaiian shirts, trinkets and shoes all under the watchful eye of the model airplanes hanging from the ceiling.

3. Pai Issara
This little shop on Ladprao Soi 61 is making ripples in Bangkok’s vintage scene.  Want a one-of-a-kind dress to make a statement at your next party? Look no further! Girlie dresses and gowns from the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s are their specialty.

4.(Un)Fashion Vintage
Specializing in vintage leather shoes from Europe, this branch opened after many years of success in Chatuchak. New stock comes in weekly but men’s boat shoes don’t last long on the shelves with current trends, the owner warns us. The store is separated into women’s and men’s fashion in separate capsules. Now under construction, (Un)Fashion Café will open in early August, providing vintage enthusiasts a trendy break from their equally trendy shopping.

5. VTG Ekkamai
1960’s concert T-shirts and posters of the Sex Pistols stand out in this shop. Find simple pieces in great condition chosen by owners with a real passion for vintage. Get decked out here and you’re ready for a night at hip hangout Happy Monday next door. Why not get a haircut by their in-house barber while you’re there?

6. Was>Were>Will
This little second hand shop is inspired by Paris but stocked with clothes targeted at the Real Japanese Housewives of Bangkok. Find a small selection of men’s shirts, women’s shirts and dresses and kid’s outfits, plus handbags and kawaii stationary, gift cards, stamps and knick knacks. A chambray shirt with red selvedge detailing was a special find.

7. Noir Vintage instagram.com/noir_boutique
A location in K-Village adds a premium to this boutique. A small selection of vintage clothing, mostly in tiny sizes, won’t provide much browsing time. If you’re looking for a unique vintage brooch, necklace or pillbox hat, though, this is the place.

8. Sugar & Cream
With branches in Siam Square’s Lido Theatre and Terminal 21, this boutique has a dedicated clientele of Bangkok vintage fashionistas. Its growing popularity and mall locations mean they charge top price for acid wash jeans, vintage-style dresses, belts, hats and clutch bags that could have belonged to your great aunt in her heyday. Order via Facebook too.

9. His & Her Vintage
Created by a husband and wife team, this shop specializes in 1950’s and 1960’s fashion. The boutique also stays true to its Chatuchak roots with locations in the weekend market and Siam Square. Order pieces as soon as they go up on their Facebook page to get your hands on one-of-a-kind cat-eye sunglasses, feather hats and retro earrings.
Open daily. Chatuchak Market and Scala Theatre. 0891149684

10. & 11. Vintage Bangkok Market and Taste Market
If you’re in the mood for shopping but not in the mood to leave the comfort of your couch, then check out these online markets.

Facebook open group Vintage Bangkok Market was initiated by His & Her Vintage for retroheads to buy and sell vintage pieces directly. There’s no middleman here, so you’re responsible for what you buy and sell.

Taste Market is the creation of Thai fashion blogger Chalisa Viravan. A fashion industry veteran with a love for vintage and impeccable taste, she curates this online flea market and blogs in Thai and English. Find her on Instagram @tastemarket.
