Thailand’s two major cinema operators announced yesterday that they will host drive-in cinema events next week in Bangkok.

Though movie theaters given the green light to reopen earlier this month as the coronavirus faded, crowds have reportedly been sparse.

Thailand’s cinemas are reopening. But are audiences ready?

That could explain why SF Cinema and Major Cineplex, who own the most screens between them, announced they would organize Western-style drive-in theaters just a few hundred meters from each other in the eastern outskirts of the capital.

Were that not enough, the competitors will host the events over the same days: July 2-5.

SF Cinema

SF Cinema in partnership with the Communications Authority of Thailand will field a 4K laser projector in the parking lot of the Crystal Design Center shopping mall in Bang Kapi district.

The movie announced yesterday will be DreamWorks’ animated musical comedy Troll World Tour. No price was announced, but more details will be shared via its socials.

When: July 2 until July 5

Where: Crystal Design Center

Major Cineplex

With nearly 500 screens making it the largest chain, Major yesterday put out a promotional poster saying it would host a drive-in event at the Central Festival EastVille shopping mall, also in Bang Kapi. The chain hasn’t revealed which movie will be shown or how much tickets will cost. More details will be shared via its socials.

When: July 2 until July 5

Where: Central Festival EastVille
