Longtail taxi boats glide by, carrying travelers on the trip of a lifetime, locals complete their daily commute by ferry, slow barges from far-off ports make their way downstream. Along the riverbanks are traditional Thai houses on stilts, old European style buildings, and the finest luxury hotels and residences.
This is the Chaophraya, one of the top spots to soak in the historic, cultural, and modern charm of the city — for visitors and Bangkokians alike. That’s right, you can choose your own adventure here, and now we’re looking for some relaxing vibes. Time to put away Google Maps and let the river (and Coconuts!) be your guide.
- Sights, sounds, and smells of luxury at Lhong 1919
Head to Klong San Pier and take a quick tuk tuk ride to arrive at Lhong 1919. First, capture the picturesque views by the riverfront of Lhong 1919. This is one place you can always rely on for Instagram glam, thanks to the historic Chinese heritage. Then, get ready to activate your senses beyond sight at Karmakamet. As your sense of smell comes into play, let your olfactory receptors uplift your spirit.
These aromas make the perfect mood-boosting gifts, so why not take some home with you? Take as much time as you need to explore the scent-sational and appreciate the natural aromas at this quaint boutique, brought to you by the aromatherapy brand that makes local Thai ingredients feel sumptuously elegant.
While you’re there, you might as well snap up some more pictures of the Chinese-inspired architecture and intentionally graffitied walls. We recommend heading there around 4pm when the place is less crowded to find the best angles for photos.
- Wat Arun: Pretty from afar and even prettier up close.
Next, head to Tha Tien Pier and take a ferry to the other side of the river to Wat Arun. There is nothing that stands out along the river more than the iconic Temple of the Dawn. Come closer to appreciate the small details like the gleaming porcelain tiles on the pagoda with embedded seashells. Climb the steep steps (be careful!) to appreciate the beautiful views and intricate designs of your surroundings.
It’s stunning at sunrise and sunset, but word on the street is that the best time to go is around noon when the midday blaze chases away the tourists. If you can stand the heat, and want some peace and quiet, head there at noon.
- Now zoom out to find the best observatory spot of Wat Arun at Sala Rattanakosin and sip a much-deserved drink after an eventful day.
Take a ferry from Wat Arun back to Tha Tien Pier on the other side of the river right before sunset. There’s a very good reason for this precise timing: you’ll beat any in-the-know tourists and get the best sunset-viewing seats at the chic riverfront hotel, Sala Rattanakosin.
As soon as sunset approaches, groups of tourists will flood the rooftop hideaway without you even noticing. Do yourself a favor. Get comfy, order some cold beers or chilled white wine, and stay there to simply savor the view until the sun disappears. Your patience will be your reward when you witness the best view of the sun setting over The Temple of Dawn (or dusk, at this point).
- Enjoy tranquil luxury on the riverfront like you’ve always dreamed of.
Close your eyes, and imagine yourself living on a coveted spot along the river, just a few feet from the edge of the water. Well, it’s soon to be a dream-come-true with the arrival of Banyan Tree Residences Riverside Bangkok.
This new development is a freehold residence that overlooks Bangkok’s most historic side of town and the ancient heart of the city. At Banyan Tree Residences Riverside Bangkok 100% of units provide riverfront views. That means you can gaze down at the boats, ferries and riverside life from a serene vantage point high above, no matter what unit you choose. We can raise a glass (or two) to that.
Given that the property is being built on a prime area of the Chaophraya riverbank, owners can expect a valuable return on investment, or a fabulous property to live in for the future. This residential area is brimming with local culture, modern luxury, unique character — attributes that evoke metropolitan serenity. It’s worth noting that this is distant enough from the commotion of downtown but also convenient enough to enjoy all the buzziest spots in Bangkok.
