A commercial for a new Thai soap set in the past makes a very modern comment on Bangkok’s taxi drivers and their never-ending list of excuses for why they can’t take you where you need to go (a service that’s also known as: their job).
The clip, called “Rangsithorn and Mankaew take a taxi to Siam” shows two well-loved Thai actors, Yuk Songphaisan and Wannarot Sonthichai, dressed in old-fashioned Thai clothing and arranging to meet in Siam. They both take separate taxis, and, in both cases, drivers give them nothing but excuses.
Among the many, many excuses that keep our two actors from their meeting in Siam include: “Can’t take you, I’m out of gas,” “I have to take my car back to the garage,” “I only go to Thonburi,” or even “I have to pick up my girlfriend.”
If we were on the writing team, we might have also added: “that withering look that just tells you your destination is too far away.”
As of today, the clip had been viewed 300,000 times.
