If you’re of Chinese descent, or, at the very least, your family celebrates Chinese New Year (aka Lunar New Year), this time of year must feel like a ball. In a couple days, your grandma and aunties will set the table with the best delicacies and savory entrees; from steamed chicken, to duck, to dumplings, to egg tarts, to gingko in ice-chilled syrup all so that everyone can feast — after your ancestors have had their share, of course.

But even if you don’t have a shred of Chinese heritage in your DNA, there’s still reason to celebrate and get in the spirit of CNY. Actually, there are six reasons, Coconuts readers.

In downtown Bangkok, a Chinese New Year celebration is about to erupt at Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery (all part of OneSiam), or as it’s officially known, ‘OneSiam The Great & Glorious Chinese New Year 2019.’

Don’t wait around at home for your grandma to bestow you with some juicy ang bao envelopes, we’re here to tempt you with 6 glorious spectacles you can take in during this special CNY event. And the whole family is invited!

1. A high-flying Chinese acrobatic show from China’s award-winning troupe

Undoubtedly, this is OneSiam’s prized performance of the CNY celebration. The shock-and-awe acts are to be performed by China’s leading troupe from Shandong, the Jining Acrobatic Troupe whose latest accolade from the 6th National Golden Lion guarantees quality performances. Watch in amazement as they show off their skills accrued from years of pole climbing and synchronized acrobatics.

The show is on from Feb 1 – 5, 2019 (6pm onwards).

2. The rare sighting of a lion (dance) in town

We have come a long way since the golden era where golden lion dances were everywhere — pretty much at all auspicious occasions: weddings, New Year’s events, and opening ceremonies. Nowadays, they’ve become a rare commodity at Chinese New Year events.

Well…rejoice again to the sounds of heavy drumming, hard-hitting cymbals, and loud gongs as 63 lions dance, roaring in 10 lucky colors and requiring as much as 300 people to power the performances, will be left, right, and center to all visitors at OneSiam.

3. From a lion to the mystical dragon

Lions are cool, but you know what’s cooler? Dragons. (Amirite, GoT fans?)

Chinese folklore and dragons go hand-in-hand, so when it comes to Chinese New Year, celebrating with dragons makes absolutely perfect sense. What does ‘OneSiam The Great & Glorious Chinese New Year 2019’ have to offer, one might ask? How about a giant, illuminating, 50-meter long LED-powered dragon maneuvered by Thailand’s best troupe.

If you can’t imagine how big that is, we highly encourage you to go and see it in real life.

The show is on from Feb 1 – 5, 2019 (6pm onwards).

4. Snap and capture at OneSiam’s CNY-themed art and fashion set

We must admit, it’s hard to take photos of anything remotely beautiful these days, thanks to the not-so-picturesque smog clouding over Bangkok.

Perhaps the Chinese-style, contemporary 3D art installations of fashion sets at Atrium, Siam Center can cure those blues. It’s all courtesy of the design collaboration between praised Thai designers Painkiller and Wonder Anatomie. In addition, photos taken on set are printed using Canon’s special printers — so come in with your best Chinese-inspired looks and smile for the camera.

5. Shoot some more Pig-tures

In case you’re not familiar with how the years in the Chinese zodiac work, this is the Year of the Pig. Don’t worry, even we sometimes lose track of which auspicious animals take over each year.

OneSiam is dedicating a special exhibition to pig sculptures for good fortune. (It wouldn’t be a Chinese event without a taste of fortune, right?) Families with little ones are welcome to snap family group shots with all 9 different pigs at Discovery Plaza, Siam Discovery — remember, it’s for good fortune.

6. Crack open a fortune cookie

Celebrate the cheesy, feel-good cliché of unraveling the wisdom hidden inside of fortune cookies at OneSiam. Costumed lions will be handing out free fortune cookies across Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery at 3 different time slots: 12:35 / 13:45 / 15:30 — so be sure not to miss out while you’re there.

Maybe this is the change of fortune we were all hoping for at the start of 2019.

As for visitors and discerning shoppers, you’re in for a Chinese New Year luck, as special privileges and promotions are waiting in store (pun alert), see details.
