From Brooklyn to Bangkok, all-day Japanese comfort eats land mid-Sukhumvit

Okonomi is minimal in every sense of the word, from atmosphere to menu. Its fan base, however, is anything but. But once past the Instagram hordes, find a quaint, mint-green house accented with natural colors.

The open space has two floors: the first being the main stage with a coffee bar and restaurant seating, while upstairs offers a bit more serenity.

In charge of the team is chef David Del Pilar Potes, who previously ran the show at the OG Okonomi, as well as sister restaurant Yuji Ramen. The menu he oversees here embraces the concept of ichiju sansai, which roughly translates to “one soup, three dishes,” a breakfast staple offering the five core food groups and balanced nutrients in one meal.

There are two types of ichiju sansai options (THB550 each): Misozuke Hamachi, featuring miso-marinated hamachi (amberjack), and Konbujime Madai, with red seabream in a seaweed marinade. Each comes with a soup, pickled vegetables, rice, and tamago (Japanese omelet).

For those who would like to venture beyond, the unagi kabayaki (grilled eel over rice, THB550) is recommended, as is the fusion-y snow crab and avocado Benedict (THB420) – basically eggs Benedict with Japanese touches.

To drink, choose from a selection of tea-based drinks, like a hot matcha latte (THB140) made with Uji green tea or an iced hojicha latte (THB140), as well as unique riffs like the kuromitsu macchiato (THB140), named for its black sugar syrup in lieu of sugar. Pair that with a sweet potato tart (THB120) for a sweet treat without the usual sugar high.

Okonomi is cashless; payment can be made by QR or credit card. The venue is located in Soi Sukhumvit 38, a short walk from BTS Thong Lo.
