Every gloriously boozy detail from Bangkok’s first Gin Jubilee

Presented by GIN JUBILEE 2017

We’re just about recovered and ready to reflect on everything that went down during the first ever Bangkok Gin Jubilee. The five-day booze festival was a literal extravaganza of entertainment, parties, tastings, bar crawling and, well, all things gin!

We already gave you an overview of all the gin-focused events so now, ladies and gin-lovers, let’s take a look back at some of the boozy highlights from earlier in the month.

Junker and Bar’s contribution was a radish-adorned cocktail made with Bombay Sapphire.

A total of 17 bars and restaurants across Bangkok competed for the best G&T made with one of the participating gins and East Imperial Tonic. Each venue partnered with an esteemed gin brand to hold a special event, workshop and/or party throughout the week.

And as for the star of the festival, everyone’s favorite botanical spirit was represented by such world-famous names as Hendrick’s, Bombay Sapphire, Citadelle, Sipsmith, Ford’s, and The Botanist. Bangkok’s own Iron Balls and Grandma Jinn’s were also out in full, juniper-laden force. Big shout-out to Dodd’s, Death’s Door and St. George, Gin Jubilee’s regional gin sponsors, as well!

Feeling those familiar FOMO vibes creeping up? Don’t worry. If you weren’t there, we’re sure the Gin Jubilee will be back in Bangkok before you know it!

Here are just some of the highlights:

Backstage Bar held a bespoke G&T night on Jan. 30 for anyone who ever wanted to push the boundaries of the ultimate gin & tonic. This dark moody bar is the perfect place to sip strong cocktails and listen to jazz.

As the official media partners for the East Imperial Gin Jubilee, we were honored to host our very own Coconuts Gin Ramble on Wednesday Jan. 31. Ten lucky readers, along with the Coconuts Media team, took off on a gin-venture starting at Crying Thaiger. We sipped coffee and orange infused East Imperial Tonic with Citadelle gin, a French craft gin made with 19 botanics.

Crying Thaiger’s G&T featured Citadelle gin with orange and coffee flavors.

The Gin Ramble rambled on to Backstage Bar, Track 17 and ended up at Bronx Liquid Parlour where Coconuts readers imbibed, mingled and debated the merits of juniper berries, thyme sprigs and orange slices. Jury’s still out on whether we prefer our gin fruity or herbal. Don’t make us choose!

Bangkok’s own Iron Balls Gin paired up with Osito, the Spanish gin fanatics, to give festival goers a chance to mix their own special G&T’s on Feb. 1. Herbs, botanicals, flowers, fruit and more were on hand for people to mix their very own concoction.

Osito mixed Iron Balls Gin with distinct Thai flavors.

Also on Feb. 1, Ford’s Gin educated the masses with their Gin Masterclass at 80/20 Bar & Restaurant. Gin lovers searched for answers to that age-old question, what really makes a G&T so amazing? The fizz? The ingredients in the tonic? I think we might need a few more glasses to answer those questions…

The week-long festival culminated in the Gin Lane event on Feb. 4 at Quaint Bangkok. There, hundreds of gin enthusiasts tried signature G&T creations from all the big names in gin: Iron Balls Bangkok, Sipsmth, Ford’s, Citadelle, Grandma Jinn’s, Hendrick’s and The Botanist. It was a night of great tunes, tasty bites and G&Ts galore. We’ve got the pictures to prove it!

Gin Lane also saw the crowning of Bangkok’s first Gin Jubilee champion. The prize went to Saimai Nantarat from Bunker Bangkok. Her take on the classic G&T is named ‘Azure Sky’. The concoction features 50ml of Hendrick’s gin, 30ml Bunker Aviation mix and is topped up with East Imperial Burma Tonic and garnished with thyme, cucumber & lemon. She’ll be heading to Singapore in November to compete at the grande final! Congrats Saimai and good luck!

Next stop for the Gin Jubilee is Aukland on Feb. 27 – March 4. Gin and kiwi infused tonic, anyone? Wink, wink.
