Compared to other parts of the country, Bali’s pretty progressive when it comes to tattoos. You don’t have to search hard to find some inked Indonesians on the island.
Yet when it comes to women going under the needle, the mindset’s not always quite so progressive and women with ink can face stigma.
To cast off any societal disapproval, an event themed “Tattoo is not Crime” was put on by Dejapu Bali and held on Sunday in Sanur at Man Shed Cafe, showcasing confident, gorgeous gals with beautiful tats.
Tattooed models posed with custom motorcycles in the garage-themed cafe. Along with the photo shoot, the event was enlivened by DJ and acoustic performances.
In addition to the badass models, the event was apparently attended by members of the Harley Davidson community, bands, and photographers.
“This event was held for members as a tribute to tattooed women, as this event is themed ‘Tattoo is not a Crime. This event is conveying the message that tattoos are not criminal and shouldn’t be considered as negative. They are works of art,” committee chairman and owner of Dejapu Bali, Putu Budi told Tribun Bali.
One of the models, Balinese woman Rikzka Oktaviani, 20, commented on the importance of the event.
“I think the response to tattooed girls is always negative, that’s wrong. They are works of art and I’m comfortable with the tattoos on my body,” Tribun Bali quoted Oktaviani as saying.
