The waves were so ferocious in the Bali Strait on Thursday that five vehicles loaded on a boat crossing from Java to Bali totally tipped over.

Pictures have been circulating of huge trucks laying on their sides in the passenger motor vessel, the Prathita IV after the boat was hit by such high waves.

This is the third such instance this month, according to local newspaper, Tribun Bali.

The boat had almost apparently made the short crossing between the two islands without incident until right before it reached the mobile dock bridge at Gilimanuk, West Bali.

“This was caused by bad weather that suddenly happened in the Bali Strait. The forecast report from BMKG was a maximum sea wave of only 0.8 meters, but looking at the waves in the Bali Strait today, they were very white and frothy from afar, with a height that I estimate was about two meters,” head of the Ketapang Port Operator Unit Class III, Isprianto said.

As a result of the trucks tipping over, at least six vehicles were damaged, including one motorbike, one refrigerator truck, three medium trucks, and one dump truck.
