The Ukrainian woman who wanted to follow her son and commit suicide in Bali will be deported back to her home country, police have said.

Local fishermen stopped Ukrainian national Sazonava Luydmila Alexandrovna alias Mila, 53, from drowning herself on a North Bali beach on April 4. The fishermen weren’t quick enough, however, to save Mila’s son, Sazonova Roman Sefeevich, 36, who apparently killed himself only moments before his mother’s rescue.

Both mother and son had tied themselves up so they would drown when in the ocean, according to local reports. It’s alleged that the pair wanted to end their own lives because they had run out of money after they had been robbed in Kuta. They had reportedly been staying on the street in Lovina, before their attempted double suicide.

Indonesian immigration say they have been consulting on the case with the Consulate General of Ukraine in Indonesia and the situation is being fully handed over to the consulate so Mila can be deported back to her home country.

Mila has said that she doesn’t want her son’s body to return with her to Ukraine and she would like for him to be cremated in Buleleng, Bali, the regency on the island where he took his own life, according to Thomas Aries Munandar, head of Singaraja Immigration office’s investigation and enforcement division.

“Mila asked if he can be laid to rest here, the consulate has asked. We are still waiting on a final decision,” Munandar said, as quoted by Merdeka
