Two West Java men drown at Seminyak Beach

With all the tourists crawling on South Bali’s beaches, it can sometimes be easy to forgot just how dangerous the ocean can really be.

Two men from West Java drowned on a Seminyak beach yesterday after hanging out in front of Hotel Pelangi.

The men were identified in a Tribun Bali as Suryana, 28, and Syamsudin, 27.

A companion and co-worker of the two West Java men, Yuwodo, 20, said Suryana and Syamsudin had gone out to the beach at around 5:30 am before they had to start work.

According to him, Suryana didn’t know how to swim, while Syamsudin could.

Yuwodo alleges that the men put themselves at risk when Syamsudin urged Suryana to go in the ocean deeper, saying only westerners are bold enough to go so deep.

“He said ‘go ahead in the middle, only bule (westerners) are brave, but we are not,’” Yuwodo told Tribun Bali

However, apparently the waves were just too big and the men couldn’t make it back to shore.

Syamsudin’s body was recovered from the shore by Balawista (search and rescue) around 9:30 am, while Suryana’s was found round 11:30 am. From Seminyak, the two were take to the morgue at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
