A foreign tourist was reportedly lost while surfing at Kuta Beach on Monday afternoon.

Bali Basarnas (Search and Rescue) has been scouring the area for the man, who is understood to be from Ukraine, since receiving a report that he didn’t make it back to the beach.

An eyewitness, Andi, who is also a surfer, says the man seemed to be learning how to surf by himself.

“The incident was approximately at 4:30pm and the tide was going down but the waves became fast again. He was not able to surf. He had been practicing alone,” Andi told Tribun Bali on Kuta Beach on Tuesday.

He added that the victim had allegedly been warned by people on the beach about the big waves.

As of Tuesday afternoon, two boats and two jet skis had been deployed by Basarnas to accelerate the search for the victim.

Members of Bali Police Sabhara Unit are also helping the search process.

Kuta, Bali’s main tourist town, is popular amongst beginner surfers who favor it for its sandy-bottom beaches, but the current there can be quite strong.
