Getting sent to prison and mega-fined is certainly not the worst thing that can happen to a thief in Bali.
One thief was brutally beaten to death by a mob on Jl. Kayu Aya in the hip area of Seminyak on Thursday night, reports Tribun Bali.
The fallen thief, identified as Adi from West Nusa Tenggara, had snatched stuff from a foreign tourist at around 8 pm and was not alone—he was reportedly working with another man and they were riding on a motorbike together.
Based on information gathered by Tribun, after stealing from the tourists on the street, Adi got off the back of the bike since the road was macet. His victim apparently pursued him and as people started to cry out “jambret” (thief, or bag snatcher), a mob started to form and Adi was beaten until he couldn’t get up. He is believed to have died on the spot.
Adi was just about 19 years old, according to Tribun.
“I also was not clear on who was shouting, but at that moment, I came across the perpetrator being attacked by the crowd. His body was battered and his head looked shattered,” a witness to the incident, Wayan Candra, told Tribun.
Adi’s accomplice remains unidentified and police believe he may have fled to Terminal Ubung in Denpasar. They are continuing to investigate.
Adi’s body was reportedly taken to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar, afterwards.
