Indonesian security guard Alexander Lourentino Ximenes, 22, was arrested on Monday evening over 12 incidents of convenience store robberies in South Bali, but not before Bali police got a shot in, putting a bullet in the suspect’s leg.

The Kupang man allegedly stole underwear, cigarettes, cologne, hair oil, and cash from mini-markets on 12 separate occasions. He would get into the convenience stores by breaking through spots in the shops’ roofs and ceilings, according to South Kuta Police Chief Doddy Monza.

“The perpetrator has stolen 12 times using this method. The total material loss from the 12 robberies is estimated at IDR100 million (US$6,817),” Monza told Detik on Wednesday.

Police tracked Monzo down using CCTV footage. At all 12 robberies, he could be seen riding a red motorbike with the same plate, police explained.

“From the results of our (license plate) check, the police number was false. It made it difficult to trace the address of the owner. Our officers looked for the perpetrator based on that plate number,” Monzo said.

Officers from the South Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Unit eventually found Ximenes on Monday morning in Nusa Dua.

Police claim that Ximenes tried to evade arrest and that’s why they shot him in the leg, as he was trying to escape.

Like many criminal suspects “trying to thwart arrest” in Indonesia, Ximenses took a bullet to the leg, the shot hitting him on the right calf.

“Yes, the perpetrator was shot during arrest,” Monzo said.
