A Russian tourist, who Indonesian immigration officers deported on Tuesday, claimed he was unable to return home on his own because he was waiting for his family to send him money for an airplane ticket after he was robbed in Jimbaran.

Vladimir Cherevatenko was found to have overstayed his visa by seven months and was deported on Tuesday out of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on a Qatar Airways flight headed to Moscow, Saroha Manullang from the Immigration Detention House in Denpasar told Detik earlier today.

The 27-year-old, who reportedly arrived in Bali on December 11 of last year, claimed to have been robbed while he was staying in Jimbaran. The unfortunate incident deprived him of the money he needed to return to his home country, Saroha said.

“Based on his statement, he has been waiting for enough money to be sent from his family to buy a ticket home to Russia. He’s been living in [Bali] with help from his friends [here],” Saroha added.

By overstaying his visa by more than 60 days from its expiration date, Cherevatenko violated Indonesia’s 2011 Immigration Law. He is also prohibited from entering Indonesia for the next six months.

Saroha did not mention whether or not Cherevatenko was also required to pay the IDR 1,000,000 (USD 70) fee that foreigners are required to pay for each day they overstay their visas, but he did mention that immigration had coordinated with the Russian embassy, which may have helped him avoid paying the massive fee he would have acquired.

“We certainly hope that this deportation will serve as a reminder for foreign tourists to keep their travel documents up to date,” Saroha said.
