A prosecutor at the Singaraja District Court this week demanded one year imprisonment and four months of social work for the teenagers who were accused of taking part in the gang rape of a middle school girl last October.
The victim’s mother, identified as KA, has since relayed her disappointment to local media outlets.
“I object and cannot accept the prosecutor’s demand, because it is unjust compared to the crime,” KA said, as quoted by Tribun.
“If the demand is only one year in prison, they must feel like the problem is over [by the end of it]. While we, especially my daughter who is the victim, must carry the burden for the rest of our lives.”
KA expressed hope that judges will deliver a just sentence to the defendants.
The victim was allegedly raped multiple times in the span of two days in different locations in Buleleng regency. Eleven people, seven of whom are underage, were allegedly involved in the gang rape. Under Indonesian law, the rape of a minor is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
