Bali Police thwarted an egg-smuggling mission on Wednesday.

It’s always amazing the things people will try to smuggle in by ferry from Java to Bali, whether it’s a truckload of pot or a bunch of poor, endangered sea turtles.

A truck carrying thousands of eggs—five tons worth—from Blitar, East Java had been trying to transit through Bali to get to Mataram, Lombok.

The truck was stopped on Wednesday evening around 6pm at West Bali’s Gilimanuk, the main crossing point between Java and Bali.

Police found 4,000 kilograms of quail eggs, 500 kilograms of chicken eggs, and 500 kilograms of duck eggs.

Illegal food smuggling apparently picks up around the Ramadan holiday time.

Upon inspection, the truck driver could not present any of the necessary documentation for the poultry eggs, including a quarantine health certificate.

“We secured a truck carrying thousands of eggs without paperwork,” Bali Water Police Director Superintendent Sukandar told Tribun Bali.

Police took the vehicle and conducted an in-depth investigation and took the truck’s driver, Amri Fardiansyah, 42, in for questioning.

“We will conduct a deeper search of this case, according to the legal process,” Sukandar said.

The eggs have been sent to Gilimanuk Animal Quarantine Office for action, he added.
