Police catch opportunistic iPhone thief who was still trying to have phone unlocked

Kuta Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit has reportedly caught a thief who stole an iPhone out of a guy’s motorbike in Tuban, Kuta.

The phone’s owner, AA, 25, apparently left the phone in the dashboard storage of his motorbike by accident when he parked in front of a supermarket on the evening of Jan. 27.

Noticing the phone, NF, 21, snatched the iPhone while AA was inside shopping.

“The victim forgot to take his mobile phone (in with him). The suspect took advantage of the victim,” Kuta Police Commissioner Wayan Sumara said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali

After he finished at the supermarket, AA came back out to realize his phone was gone and immediately reported it stolen to police.

Now, we would have thought it a crapshoot that AA ever see his phone again, but apparently he had CCTV and some luck on his side.

Security footage showed NF taking the iPhone and revealed that he was driving a Honda Vario scooter and showed his plate numbers.

During a routine patrol, police say they noticed the suspect’s bike parked on Jl. Legian.

“Officers conducted a search and questioned the owner of the vehicle. From questioning, he confessed to the theft. The stolen iPhone was still with his friend who he asked to unlock it. The perp has been arrested,” Sumara said.
