A family of three has been arrested in Bali’s Gianyar regency for allegedly stealing about IDR 300 million (USD 21,061) from a relative’s bank account via ATM. Police said they spent the money over the course of five months on a bunch of items, including a motorcycle, television and refrigerator.

In a statement issued yesterday, police from Sukawati sub-district in Gianyar said the suspects, identified by their initials IWS, IKS and NKM, were arrested on Tuesday.

Authorities received the theft report from the victim, identified as 41-year-old I Wayan Suka, at about 8am on Tuesday, and promptly made the arrests about two hours later.

“The suspects robbed the victim by taking his ATM card, which was later used to take the money from his account, up to around IDR 300 million. The money was used to buy valuable and everyday items,” Sukawati Police said in a statement.

According to a report from Tribun-Bali, each of the family members had their own respective roles in the thievery. NKM, the wife, stole the ATM card from Suka under instructions from her husband, IKS. Their son, IWS, was the one who made the withdrawals.

Police said that Suka’s ATM card had actually been stolen since March, but he only realized that it was missing this week because he never used it.

“They withdrew money from the ATM around 60 times since March until they were arrested,” First Police Inspector Gusti Ngurah Jaya Winangun from the Sukawati Police said earlier today, as reported by Tribun-Bali.

The family allegedly used the stolen money to buy a number of items, including two Apple iPhones, a Yamaha N-Max motorcycle, a refrigerator and a 43-inch TV.
