Police apprehended dozens of youths in Mengwi, Badung regency last night following complaints from local residents that they’ve been engaging in illegal motorcycle racing.
“What they’re doing has been a great concern for local residents. We received information that every night there’s wild street racing in the area,” Ketut Suandi, an officer from the Badung Police, said today.
Police said the street racing would typically start after midnight, and last until about 3am. Though pecalang (traditional Balinese security forces) officers and those who live nearby have reportedly tried to reason with them, the youths have carried on with the illegal activities anyway.
Just before 2am today, police seized 20 motorbikes and apprehended 36 people, who were later taken to the sub-precinct and given a warning. Suandi also said that their parents will be summoned.
“We will call their parents to the police station. This is part of our guidance process at the Badung Police, with the hope that it will act as a deterrent [in the future],” Badung Police spokesman Ketut Gede Oka Bawa said.
