UPDATE Peruvian fugitive arrested in Sumatra a week after escape through Bali court bathroom window

Authorities in Indonesia are the hunt for a Peruvian national accused of ATM fraud in Bali, after he escaped from Denpasar District Court through a bathroom window, nearly a week ago.

The search for Jose William Salazar Ortiz, 37, has been broadened to beyond Bali since he got away on May 16, according to a source from the Denpasar prosecutor’s office.

Smaller islands Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Gili Trawangan have already apparently been combed.

“The hunt for him has now been expanded to Jakarta,” Nusa Bali quoted the unidentified source as saying.

Ortiz is known to have a number of friends in Jakarta and it was in the capital city where he was arrested, after fleeing Bali.

Meanwhile, the head of Intelligence and PR for the Denpasar prosecutor’s office, Igna Kusumayasa Diputra declined to comment about the scope of the search for Ortiz, explaining that they don’t want anything to interfere with their search.

However, Diputra did say that they were hot on Ortiz’s trail.

“He’s definitely already been detected. Hopefully we can soon secure him,” Diputra said.

Ortiz is one of three Peruvian defendants charged with participating in a network of ATM fraud. The three were previously arrested in Jakarta on January 1, 2017, then taken to Denpasar for further legal processing since their alleged crimes mostly took place in Bali.
